When first starting your freelance writing career, you might have dreamed of all the free time you’d have in your day. You create your own schedule and if you wanted to take an hour break in the middle of the day to run errands or have a bubble bath, you thought, of course I’ll have time for that!
Now you might be realizing that’s not the truth, it’s actually quite the opposite.
As a freelance writer working from home, you know how hard it can be to separate work time from personal time.
You’re running your own business and you’re juggling a lot of tasks.
It can be very easy to forget about self-care when growing your freelance writing business. You have clients to write for, social media accounts to manage, a website to update, emails to send and so much more.
You only have yourself to rely on to keep your business going and that may make you feel like you can’t allow yourself even a 15 minute break in your day. This isn’t healthy and if you don’t take the time for self-care, you will eventually burn out.
Do you want a successful business while being tired and over-worked?
Or do you want to have a successful business and be happy and healthy?
You’ll be much more productive, healthy, happy and successful if you take a some time each week, or even every day, for self-care.
Here are some tips and ideas for how you can incorporate self-care into your routine.
1. Schedule Breaks For Yourself
If you have a hard time stepping away from your work, schedule a few breaks for yourself throughout the day and stick to them, like you would if you were working for someone else. It’s important to let your mind take a rest.
2. Set An Alarm
If you’re forgetful or you get so into your writing that you wouldn’t notice a marching band walking across your front lawn, set some alarms on your phone or computer that will remind you to take a break and step away from your desk.
3. Get Up And Exercise
New studies have shown that sitting all day is bad for your health. Make sure to get your butt out of your chair, even if it’s just to stand up and walk around! Add an exercise routine into your schedule if you can, it’s great for your body and mind and you’ll have more energy to get through the rest of your day.
4. Get Outside
Get outside and get some fresh air! Take your pet for a walk or work outside on the deck for a while. Being in the sun and breathing fresh air is great for your mental health, so don’t stay cooped up in the house with the curtains closed all day.
5. Read A Book
Take a break from your work and read something for fun! Pick up your favorite book or download a new novel on your e-reader. If you’re not much of a reader, watch an episode of your favorite T.V. show!
6. Grab Lunch With A Friend
Go out to lunch with a friend or meet your spouse for lunch. Working alone can be great but it can also be lonely, meet up with friends once and awhile to chat…in real life!
7. Make A Cozy Space For Yourself
Clear off that cluttered desk! Light a candle, hang some artwork or inspirational quotes and create a workspace for yourself that will give you peace of mind.
8. Write In A Journal
Take a few minutes to reflect. Write down your accomplishments, what you’re grateful for and goals you want to reach.
9. Schedule “Play Time”
Give yourself 5 minutes of play time, several times throughout the day! Having a bit of time to goof around will greatly improve your mood. Have a little dance break, play a game you like, whatever brings you joy and makes you feel like a kid again!
For 30 minutes to 1 hour each day, unplug from your devices. Take a break from the constant ping of email and social media notifications by switching to airplane mode. You can also download apps that will block distractions.
